How does Hepatitis B illness develop?

While most people do not experience any symptoms during the acute phase of the infection, some may experience an acute illness with symptoms lasting several weeks, such as nausea or vomiting, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), fatigue and abdominal pain.

A small number of people with acute hepatitis will develop acute liver failure, which can lead to death. Hepatitis B can also cause a long-term, chronic liver condition. Some people fail to clear the virus from their system, becoming infectious carriers for life.

Up to 5% of individuals infected as adults will become carriers of the infection for life. About 1 in 3 life-long carriers will go on to develop liver disease, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
