FAQs
What is the assessment process?
Initial assessments are completed over 2 x one hour video sessions with a Clinical
Psychologist or Consultant Psychiatrist. A clinical hour typically comprises 45-50
minutes of client discussion with the remainder providing the clinician time to
complete notes and administrative tasks.
Following the assessment you will be provided with a diagnostic report and letter to
your GP outlining the outcome of the assessment including any diagnosis and/or
treatment recommendation.
If the assessment concludes that you have a diagnosis of ADHD and you wish to
explore medication, a Medication Review appointment can be booked, which will be
with a Consultant Psychiatrist. Subsequent medication review appointments may be
with a Consultant Psychiatrist or Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
Can I have my appointment in person and not online?
We are in the process of re-opening our in-person assessment centre which is due to
open later in 2023.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
Yes a GP referral must be submitted at the time of booking your appointment. The
referral must include details of any past medical and mental health history. This
can be uploaded as part of the booking process or can be emailed to
[email protected]
We do not accept referrals from psychologists or mental health counsellors.
Are there situations where you do not offer assessments to clients?
Yes - we do not currently offer assessments to individuals who are under the care of
another psychiatrist or are attending their community mental health team (CMHT).
We do not offer assessments on an urgent basis.
We do not offer assessments to individuals with active substance misuse
difficulties.
What if I have a previous diagnosis of ADHD?
Please upload or email your diagnostic report AND the referral letter from your GP
at the time of booking.
You will still need to book in for an initial 60 minute assessment with a Consultant
Psychiatrist, and follow-up appointments to review any prescribed medication.
Patients need to be seen for a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after a medication is
initiated, and again following a 6 week trial of an appropriate medication, and
every 4 months thereafter.
Can the service prescribe medication?
Yes, our Psychiatrists and Advanced Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication
where appropriate. Please note that medication can only be prescribed after a
completed diagnostic assessment and physical examination with your GP, including a
cardiovascular examination, heart rate and blood pressure check to ensure there are
no underlying issues.
We will write to your GP advising them of the outcome of any assessment and request
details of the physical examination, which you will need to schedule with your GP
following your assessment.
Individuals who have completed the assessment process and have a confirmed diagnosis
of ADHD can book a Medication Review appointment to discuss medication. Your initial
Medication Review appointment will be with a Consultant Psychiatrist. If medication
is deemed appropriate, initially a 2 week prescription is issued with another
medication review appointment needed then to assess progress and discuss next steps.
How many follow up appointments will I need?
This depends on response to medication and can vary. Sometimes multiple medications
need to be trialled in order to find the most suitable one for an individual.
At minimum individuals need to be seen for a medication review appointment 2 weeks
after a new medication is initiated, and again following a 6 week trial of an
appropriate medication, and every 4 months thereafter.
Patients also need a 6-monthly physical check-up with their GP while taking ADHD
medication.
